Chiang Rai’s Golden Toilet

P1870131_peIT is not a golden palace where a royal family lives, or a temple but it is a public restroom. The golden toilet at Wat Rong Khun temple is probably the most luxurious and the most photographed restroom in the world.

I usually take sneak photos of everything and anything everywhere I go but I don’t find toilets an interesting subject. This however is one is an exemption.

P1870365_pePeople usually fall in long lines outside restrooms anywhere for their personal business and relief but this is a different story.  I have never seen a long queue waiting for their chance to take photos in front of the building, not counting the hundreds of others who take selfie shots with their phones.

This impressive, elaborately-designed golden building sits right next to the White Temple, an iconic landmark in Northern Thailand which put Chiang Rai province on the map. Chiang Rai is the northernmost city of Thailand.

P1870369_peThai artist Chalermchai Khositpipat chose gold for the restroom to indicate worldliness.

After you’re done with the toilet tour, turn to your right and there sit a spectacle you wouldn’t want to miss—the White Temple built to signify the purity of Buddha. Watch out for my next post.

The Wat Ron Khun is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
